Raspberries - Punnet

An interesting quality of the raspberry is that it is a ‘hollow’ fruit (they do not have a core; the little berries are held together by a network of tiny hairs!) They are delicious when eaten fresh, added to yoghurt or made into a fruit tart.

How do we make sure we provide top quality raspberries?

There are several quality criteria to ensure we obtain top quality raspberries. Firstly, we make sure the raspberry is plump and firm (no sign of wrinkles or dehydration). Secondly, we make sure the colour is right (a bright red colour is best). Thirdly, we check for any signs of juice in the punnet (this indicates that at least one of the raspberries is past its use-by-date). Finally, we make sure there is no dark spots or raspberry fur (both signs of ageing).

Where do we source our raspberries from?

Raspberries grow best in a temperate climate with a winter chill (to help with bud break) and a warm dry summer (to help with ripening). We source most of our raspberries from boutique growers around the Melbourne and Colac areas. If Victorian supply is short, we source our raspberries from Tasmania (the Channel Deloraine and Huon regions) South Australia (the Adelaide Hills region) or New South Wales.

What is the best way to keep raspberries?

Raspberries store best in the fridge (optimal storage conditions are at 0°C and 90%-100% relative humidity).
