Blueberries - Punnet

Blueberries are a native of North America and are scrumptious when served as blueberry pie, compote, or as part of a fruit platter!

How do we make sure we provide top quality blueberries?

We measure the taste and freshness of blueberries by checking the fruit is plump in size, and has a slightly misty appearance. We ensure there are no other signs of decay, such as an overly ripe aroma, soft or dark spots, excess juice at the bottom of the punnet, or age-related fur growing on the berries.

Where do we source our blueberries from?

We source most of our blueberries from around the Colac, Healesville and Myrtleford regions. If Victorian supply is short, we source blueberries from New South Wales (usually from Camden, Coffs Harbour, Gosford or the Hunter Valley). These areas suit the blueberry shrub well – it requires cool winters, cool summer nights, and warm summer days. They also need well-drained acid soil, with organic content above 5% (peat lands are ideal, so long as drainage is adequate). When blueberry shrubs are brought out of dormancy, attractive white or pink coloured flowers develop, and then the berries then take about sixty to ninety days to ripen, during that time they change from green to red to blue. The best berries are always hand harvested, the grower gently massages the cluster and the berries that are ripe enough (in size and sweetness) simply fall off.

What is the best way to keep blueberries?

Blueberries are best stored in the fridge (optimal storage conditions are at 0°C and 90%-100% relative humidity). They tend not to store for very long, so make sure you use them quickly.
