Beetroot (Organic)

The sweet flavour of a beetroot (it has the highest sugar content of any vegetable) makes it a favourite in salads, lunches and juices. It’s low in calories, and an excellent source of folate!

How do we make sure we provide top quality beetroot?

Simple - we grow them ourselves! Sam draws on three generations of horticultural experience to grow fresh, sweet and full-flavoured beetroot. When we harvest, we only hand-pick beetroot if it is the right size for the season (smaller at the start of the season and larger towards the end). If the beetroot is too large, it tends to be tougher and more woody in taste. It must have dark green leaves, a smooth & hard bulb, and a deep red-purple colouring (all of which are good indicators of quality and taste). We harvest all beetroot by hand, to ensure quality and minimise bruising.

Where do we source our beetroot from?

Our beetroot usually comes direct from our farm - planted, cultivated and hand-picked by Sam and the team. When it's too hot to grow high quality beetroot in Bacchus Marsh, or when the conditions aren't favourable to growing beetroot on our farm (due to crop rotation etc), we source our supply from growers at higher altitudes (with typically cooler climates), such as around Ballarat.

What is the best way to keep beetroot?

Beetroot is best stored at lower temperatures (about 0-4°C and 90%-100% relative humidity). A good way to preserve beetroot's quality (and nutrients) is to only cut the bulb when you're ready to cook or eat it.

Beetroot serving tips and suggestions

If you are cooking beetroot, make sure you add a touch of vinegar or lemon juice to the cooking water - it helps lock in the flavor, colour and nutrients. Throw beetroot leaves in with the rest of your salad greens to add great colour and taste!
