Sourced from local farms, our unwaxed and untreated Granny Smiths come straight from the tree! Originating in the backyard of Mrs Maria Ann (Granny) Smith in Sydney, Granny Smiths have a crunchy flesh with a crisp, juicy and tart flavour. This makes the Granny Smith an excellent choice for apple juice, apple pies, apple strudels, or stewed into an apple sauce. They’re also tasty as a work snack!
How do we make sure we provide top quality Granny Smith apples?
The Granny Smith should ideally have a deep green colour, sometimes with a slight pink blush to the cheeks.
We make sure that the Granny Smith apples we choose for your box are firm with a smooth, clear skin. We avoid Granny Smiths with soft or dark spots. We test the integrity of the Granny Smith by holding the apple in the palm of our hand and feeling that the apple is solid and heavy (avoiding apples that are soft and light). We avoid Granny Smiths that wrinkle when a thumb is gently run across the skin (this is an indicator that it has been in storage for too long, or has not properly stored). We also check for “russeting” – a rough, browning condition usually found at the stem end of the apple.
Where do we source our Granny Smith apples?
Granny Smith apples are grown in all six Australian states. We try to source locally grown apples (from around the Bacchus Marsh region), and if local supply is low, we source from other Victorian locations such as the Goulburn Valley, Harcourt, Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula and Gippsland.
What is the best way to keep Granny Smith apples?
Apples are best stored in a plastic bag in the refrigerator and kept away from strong odour food to prevent flavour absorption.
