Golden Delicious are a sweet and aromatic apple. They are at their best when their skin turns from a greenish complexion to a brilliant gold colour. They are great for cooking during the winter time – their sweet flavour is tasty when steamed or pureed, or served in muffins or apple cakes!

How do we make sure we provide top quality Golden Delicious apples?

The Golden Delicious apple can range in colour from a less mature light green (which exhibit a tart flavour) to a more mature (and sweeter) pale and creamy yellow. We try to supply them when they are at their tastiest, so use their colour as a good guide.

We also make sure that the Golden Delicious apples we choose for your box are firm with a smooth, clear skin. We avoid Golden Delicious with soft or dark spots. We test the integrity of the Golden Delicious by holding the apple in the palm of our hand and feeling that the apple is solid and heavy (avoiding apples that are soft and light). We avoid Golden Delicious that wrinkle when a thumb is gently run across the skin (this is an indicator that it has been in storage for too long, or has not properly stored). We also check for “russeting” – a rough, browning condition usually found at the stem end of the apple.

Where do we source our golden delicious apples?

Golden Delicious apples are grown in all six Australian states. We try to source locally grown apples (from around the Bacchus Marsh region), and if local supply is low, we source from other Victorian locations such as the Goulburn Valley, Harcourt, Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula and Gippsland.

What is the best way to keep Golden Delicious apples?

Apples are best stored in a plastic bag in the refrigerator and kept away from strong odour food to prevent flavour absorption.

Apples are low in kilojoules and contain plenty of vitamin C, fibre (pectin) and potassium. Many of the important nutrients and phytochemicals such as ellagic acid and quercetin are contained in the apples skin.
